AI Scene Beats: From a Plan to Causal, Natural Prose

A scene beat is a target for what changes, not a summary of what the writer should explain. Give AI the entry state, character goal, resistance, turn, and exit state; then revise the result for causality and voice in separate passes.

What makes a scene beat usable?

Use this beat contract before asking for prose:

Entry state: What does the viewpoint character believe or possess now?
Goal: What concrete result do they pursue in this scene?
Resistance: Who or what prevents the easy result?
Escalation: What makes the current approach more costly?
Turn: What new information or choice changes the situation?
Exit state: What is now true that was not true at the start?
Preserve: Which facts, relationships, and knowledge boundaries cannot change?

The exit state is the quality test. “They talk about the problem” is not an ending state. “She gets the key but gives the director a copy of the letter” is inspectable and can drive the next scene.

Ask AI for beats before prose when the decision is unclear

Using the story facts below, propose three scene beats.
For each, list the character choice, immediate cost, new information, and exit state.
Preserve the viewpoint character's limited knowledge.
Do not write prose and do not choose an option for me.

Choose the option that creates a problem the character must address next. Surprise without consequence is not a useful turn.

Move from a beat to a bounded draft

Once the beat is accepted, keep the writing request narrow:

Write approximately 450 words from this accepted beat.
Viewpoint: Close third person through Mara.
Goal: Obtain the storeroom key.
Resistance: The director demands the original letter.
Turn: Mara offers a copy and hides the substitution.
Exit state: She leaves with the key; the director notices the envelope is light.
Do not reveal his motive, add a rescuer, or skip the exchange.
Output prose only.

If the generated text invents a fact, do not silently accept it as canon. Mark it as a proposal, remove it, or revise the scene with the boundary made explicit.

Revise in two passes

Pass one: causality and continuity

Check each action against the scene state:

• Does the character act on information they have?
• Does the resistance require a response rather than a description?
• Does the turn follow from an observable event or choice?
• Does the exit state match the accepted beat?
• Did the prose add a rule, object, or relationship that was not established?

Ask AI to review rather than rewrite:

Review this scene against the supplied beat and facts.
Return a table with: issue, quoted evidence, why it conflicts, smallest correction.
Mark uncertain issues as insufficient information. Do not rewrite the scene.

Pass two: voice and texture

Only after the facts work, inspect rhythm, diction, repetition, sensory detail, and dialogue. Provide a short style reference and name what must remain unchanged:

Revise only for sentence rhythm and concrete sensory detail.
Preserve event order, viewpoint, character knowledge, and the final exchange.
Remove explanatory emotion labels where an action can carry the meaning.
Return only the revised passage.

Compare the revision with the original. A smoother sentence is not an improvement if it changes the character's knowledge or motive.

When should I regenerate?

Regenerate when the task itself is wrong: the goal is vague, the resistance is absent, or the ending state is impossible. Edit manually when the scene works but a few lines are weak. A full regeneration can undo details you already accepted.
