AI Fiction Prompts: Templates for Drafting, Rewriting, and Plot Checks

A useful fiction prompt specifies the task, prior context, viewpoint, scene conflict, boundaries, and ending beat. “Make it compelling” describes an aspiration without identifying the story problem. Define what one generation should accomplish before layering on style instructions.

The templates below are ordinary text, not software macros. Replace the sample characters, circumstances, and lengths with your own. They are starting points for revision, not promises of a particular result.

1. Identify the missing information first

Compare these requests:

Weak request: Continue the story. Add suspense and elegant language.

More specific: Continue Mara's negotiation with the archive director. She needs the key; he wants her letter. Stay with what Mara can observe. Build suspense through evasive answers and delayed actions. End when the director proposes an exchange.

The second request creates inspectable criteria: a negotiation takes place, viewpoint stays bounded, and the exchange is proposed. Stacking adjectives such as “cinematic” or “sophisticated” gives you fewer concrete ways to assess a draft.

2. Continuation template: define the landing point

Task: Continue the current passage for approximately 350 words.
Context: Mara found a page missing from her mother's letter and visits the director.
Viewpoint: Close third person through Mara; do not enter the director's thoughts.
Goal: Mara tests whether he knows where the page went.
Resistance: He keeps redirecting the conversation toward tomorrow's move.
Preserve: Mara does not yet have the storeroom key.
Avoid: Revealing her mother's fate or interrupting the scene with a phone call.
Ending: The director demands to inspect the original letter first.
Output: Prose only, without an explanation of the writing choices.

3. Rewrite template: specify what must stay unchanged

Task: Rewrite the selected dialogue to reduce explanatory speeches.
Preserve: Event order, character knowledge, ownership of the letter, and the final offer.
Change: Let the director evade with questions and pauses; let Mara ask about specific records.
Remove: Summary statements such as “I am nervous” or “he was lying.”
Limits: Add no clues, characters, or biographical facts.
Output: Only the revised passage.

Revision does not have to reinvent the plot. A preservation list helps you distinguish improved expression from altered story facts. Selecting a small passage also makes comparison easier: verify the preserved details before judging whether you prefer the new rhythm.

4. Expansion template: build the scene through action

Task: Expand “Mara entered the storeroom and found evidence of a visitor” into a short scene.
Action order: Unlock the door, notice disturbed dust, inspect a shelf, find an empty folder.
Sensory detail: Emerge from Mara's actions rather than a separate inventory of the room.
Conflict: She must identify what is missing before footsteps reach the door.
Limits: Do not identify the visitor or introduce a secret passage.
Ending: She lifts the empty folder and hears keys touch outside.

If expansion adds wall colors and weather without changing the character's situation, the request needs action and pressure. An ordered sequence gives you a clearer way to assess the output than repeatedly asking for “richer detail.” Keep details that influence attention, choices, or risk.

5. Plot-check template: require supporting evidence

Check the supplied scene against the attached character notes and prior-scene summary.
Use only the supplied material; do not invent missing facts.
Return a table: location, quoted evidence, reason for conflict, smallest suggested correction.
Focus on premature knowledge, object ownership, chronology, and motivation changes.
Mark uncertain issues “insufficient information” rather than treating them as definite errors.
Review first; do not rewrite the prose.

6. Change one main variable per revision

Check plot accuracy first, character voice and viewpoint second, and rhythm, wording, and repetition third. Simultaneously requesting shorter text, more detail, slower pacing, and faster progress makes failures difficult to diagnose.

Are longer prompts better?

Not necessarily. Length helps when it provides necessary context. Remove irrelevant history, repeated instructions, and conflicting demands first. Maintain recurring facts in a character profile; keep the individual request focused on this scene's task.

Why does the same prompt produce different results?

The model, supplied context, sampling settings, and manuscript input can all affect output. Save candidates alongside the conditions you used, then compare which change helped. A prompt cannot guarantee identical wording or an exact word count.
